July 7, 2012

One of the most popular guys in school has started giving me a lot of attention. We begin hanging out frequently. Soon his popular friends are also hanging out with me (these were some popular people I knew in high school). One night I finally tell him that it feels wrong, that he and I should stop spending so much time together. I turn to leave and he admits that he is falling in love with me. He kisses me.

The next night is a football game. He is playing, and I am sitting in the stands with some of his closest friends. The game is tied and we are all watching frantically, me especially since I don't like football and I'm worried for his safety. Suddenly he is pummeled and dog piled by half of the other team. When they get up, he doesn't. I clasp my hand over my mouth & his friends turn to look at me. When the medic runs onto the field, I stand up in alarm. They're still staring at me. I run down to the field as fast as I can and demand to ride in the ambulance with him as they carry him out on a stretcher.

At the hospital he is asleep in the bed, his grandfather and I sitting in the chairs by his bed. He wakes up and sees me and asks what I'm doing here in a kind of harsh tone. I tell him he broke his leg and his arm and that he has a concussion. He asks what I'm doing here again. I tell him I wanted to make sure he was okay. "Get out," he says.

"What? No."

His grandfather stands and says he'll give us a minute, then leaves.

"I said get out!"

"And I said no!"

He turns his face to me angrily, when before he had it turned away. "What did you think? That because we kissed that makes me your boyfriend? Well I'm not. You can just leave."

"Maybe you misheard me. I'm NOT leaving."

"I don't love you. It was a lie. It was a DARE. There's nothing for you here. So just GET OUT."

I start to leave. I turn to say, "You're a liar and a coward, but I hope you're happy," with a sharp tone. Then I leave.

His grandpa comes back in & asks where I went.

"I made her leave. I didn't want her here to see me like this."

He grimaces and sits down. "You're a damned fool. That girl loves you, & only an imbecile gives that up willingly."

The next day I'm invited to a party by one of his friends. I tell her we broke up. "Ha, that's too bad. But I like you better than him anyway! Don't tell him." I go to the party, everyone asks about him. I tell them what happened but that we broke up. They're all very apologetic. That's where the dream ended.
